Historical Context

The Canon Canonet QL17 (and specifically its final iteration, the QL17 G-III) is widely considered one of the greatest compact 35mm rangefinders ever made. It is frequently referred to as the “Poor Man’s Leica” because it offers a bright viewfinder, quiet operation, and incredibly sharp glass in a compact body, but without the astronomical price tag.

The biggest draw of the QL17 is the fixed glass. The 40mm focal length is a perfect middle ground between the wideness of a 35mm and the tighter framing of a 50mm, making it ideal for street photography and everyday carry. At f/1.7, it is exceptionally fast, allowing for great low-light performance and beautiful background separation. Canon’s optical engineering here is legendary—the lens is razor-sharp even when shot wide open.

Loading 35mm film can sometimes be a fiddly process of threading the leader into a narrow take-up spool. Canon solved this with their brilliant Quick Load system. You simply pull the film leader across the back of the camera, align it with a red mark, close the door, and wind. A specialized internal pressure plate automatically grabs the film and ensures it winds perfectly every time.
