Historical Context
Produced from 1957 to 1964, the Kodak Brownie Bullet is a tiny, incredibly simple Bakelite box camera that was rarely sold in retail stores. Instead, it was manufactured primarily as a “premium” or promotional giveaway.
If you bought enough Campbell’s Soup and mailed in the labels, or opened a new bank account during a promotional period, the company would send you a Brownie Bullet in the mail for free. It was a brilliant strategy by Kodak: give away the camera for pennies to third-party companies, then profit for years when the new camera owners inevitably bought Kodak film and paid for Kodak developing.
