Historical Context

While the Retina series was Kodak’s flagship line of premium engineering, the Kodak Retinette series was its highly popular, economy-minded younger sibling. Produced by Kodak AG in Stuttgart, Germany, from 1959 to 1966, the Retinette 1A (Type 044) was designed to offer the precise mechanical feel of a high-end German camera at a budget friendly price point for everyday families.

Earlier Retinette models from the 1930s and 50s were folding cameras with leather bellows. The Retinette 1A completely abandoned that old-school design for a modern, fixed-barrel, rigid chassis. It adopted the signature, ultra-clean aesthetic of the late-50s German Retinas, utilizing a bright satin-chrome top plate and a heavy, die-cast metal body wrapped in textured faux-leather.
