Historical Context

Released in 1985, the Nikon F-301 (marketed as the N2000 in North America) marks a massive technological crossroads for Nikon. It was the camera that dragged Nikon out of the classic thumb-wind era and firmly into the high-tech, motorized, electronic landscape of the late 1980s.

It holds two major milestones in Nikon’s history: it was their very first SLR to feature an integrated, built-in motorized film advance (eliminating the need for a separate, bulky bottom-mounted motor drive accessory), and it was their first camera to utilize DX-code film speed sensing.

Designed under the continuation of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s aesthetic influence, it features a sleek, angular black polycarbonate body, an integrated right-hand grip, and a subtle red accent stripe that would define Nikon’s visual brand identity for decades to come.
