Notes & History
Historical Context
Introduced in 1954, the Leica M3 is widely considered one of the most important cameras ever manufactured. Before the M3, Leica’s earlier “screw-mount” models (like the Barnack Leicas) required users to look through two separate windows—one to focus the rangefinder and another to compose the shot. The M3 changed everything, establishing the modern standard that the Leica M system still follows today.
