Historical Context

The Rolleiflex Automat MX (manufactured by Franke & Heidecke in Germany from 1951 to 1954) is a seminal masterpiece of twin-lens reflex (TLR) engineering. Sitting right in the sweet spot of post-war optical development, the Automat MX consolidated all the features that made Rolleiflex the gold standard for photojournalists, fashion photographers, and studio artists across the globe before the mass ascension of 35mm SLRs.

The MX introduced a clever mechanical override switch surrounding the film advance crank hub. By sliding this toggle, you can cock the internal shutter mechanism by winding the crank backward half a turn without advancing the film forward. This unlocked the ability to shoot precise, intentional double or multiple exposures on a single square frame—a feature that was highly praised by experimental fine-art photographers of the 1950s.
