Historical Context

The Sears KS Super II, introduced in the early 1980s, is a highly capable 35mm SLR camera that tells a fascinating story of department store marketing and corporate partnerships. During this era, Sears, Roebuck and Co. was a retail colossus that sold everything from tools to house paint under proprietary house brands. For their photography department, they routinely partnered with established Japanese optical manufacturers to rebadge high-quality cameras for the American consumer market.

Underneath the “Sears KS Super II” logo plate sits the exact mechanical and electronic architecture of the Ricoh KR-10 Super (and shares significant DNA with the legendary Ricoh XR-7). Ricoh manufactured the camera from top to bottom in Japan, tuning it specifically to Sears’ contract specifications. Because it was marketed as a store brand, it was sold at a much lower price point than main-line Nikons or Canons, making it an incredible sleeper value for amateur photographers then—and vintage film shooters today.
