Historical Context

The Yashica Mat 124G, produced from 1970 until 1986, stands as the absolute pinnacle of Yashica’s twin-lens reflex (TLR) engineering. It was the last TLR model the company ever manufactured, summarizing decades of design refinements into a single, definitive medium format camera. Widely celebrated as the ultimate entry point into serious square-format film photography, it was engineered to look, feel, and perform like the legendary German Rolleiflex, but at a fraction of the cost.

The camera features a premium Yashinon 80mm f/3.5 taking lens (a 4-element, Tessar-style optical formula) paired with a bright Yashinon 80mm f/2.8 viewing lens on top. The taking lens is highly revered for its optical contrast and resolution. When stopped down slightly to f/5.6 or f/8, it delivers biting, edge-to-edge sharpness that captures staggering detail on the large medium format negative.

The “G” designation denotes “Gold.” Yashica upgraded the internal electrical contacts of the light meter system to solid gold plating. This design choice radically reduced the electrical resistance and prevented the surface oxidation or green crust common in older models, ensuring the camera’s built-in match-needle light meter remains exceptionally responsive and stable over decades of use. Visually, this model is instantly recognized by its striking, minimalist all-black cosmetic trim and gold-lettered nameplate.
